Talk:
Behind Light – Still Wasting Energy?

By sharing stories behind the use of lighting in Hong Kong, our talks and workshops encourage participants to rethink the effects of overusing energy. Through understanding, we drive actions to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and tackle climate change. We shall also rethink the motive behind supporting the ferocious external lighting of our city.

Talk:
Seven Brothers of Plastic

From the birth of plastic, we will take you through the entire journey of plastic which is a material of unparalleled versatility. No doubt, plastic brings us lots of convenience, but at the same time it has also become one of the top three municipal solid wastes by weight. The people of Hong Kong seem living in a plastic world, throwing away more than five million PET bottles every day, over 50 million disposable plastic cutlery, not to mention the micro-plastic particles which have even entered the food chain. Plastics threaten public health and damage the ecological environment. The talk will show you the other face of plastic and the headache it brings to our daily lives.

Green Life

Talk:
My Green Life

The Green Earth will explore green living in different aspects of life including clothing, food, living and transportation. Let’s share practical tips that are good to ourselves and our mother earth.

Other Talks & Upcycling Workshops:

1. "Not Waste, but Resources!" Talk
Despite the common knowledge that landfills in Hong Kong are nearly full, over 14,000 tonnes of waste is still dumped there every day. But wait, what is the “waste”? Is it avoidable? For the waste which is lucky enough to be recycled, where will it end up? Let’s crack these questions one by one.

2. "Save Food for Good Fortune" Talk (Environmental enzyme DIY workshop can be added)

In 2020, the daily disposal of food waste in Hong Kong was over 3,200 tonnes, adding up to over 1.1 million tonnes a year. That is equivalent to the weight of 78,000 double-decked buses. This figure is astonishing and can be cut right from our dining table. Our discussion will include ways to reduce and reuse food waste. Environmental enzyme DIY workshop can also be conducted upon request.

3. Cosmetics Regeneration and Zentangle Workshop
There are various brands and types of cosmetic products. Apart from using the make-up products on your face, have you ever thought of using them as paints to draw beautiful pictures on paper by upcycling? The product life cycle of cosmetics is much shorter than most other consumer goods. In developed countries, their average life span is even as short as one month only. One of the biggest cosmetic brands has investigated that 80% of the purchased products are not actively used. It is also found that 70% of the cosmetics packaging disposed of in the landfill contain unfinished products. The vast amount of cosmetic products and packaging discarded in the landfill is a huge burden on the environment. In the workshop, we will learn about the environmental impact brought by cosmetics waste and will upcycle the make-up products into paints. We will also guide you to draw Zentangle pictures in a relaxing manner.

While more and more people like to visit the countryside, there is a growing volume of trash being collected from the nature. A recent survey showed that the amount of trash at country parks reached 1,800 tonnes in 2020 - 2021. In view of this, we will organize country park clean-up activities to recover the beauty of nature and to analyze the waste collected, which will give us a good reflection of our living habits.
